You see, this is a movie about two old guys, that believe in something I don't. The whole thing is pretty much just the two of them waking (slowly) and talking. The essence of the mismatched buddy movie genre is a clash of personalities and ideologies.

A mutual antipathy gives way to grudging respect, eventually warming into friendship. Given how much of the film is taken up by two elderly men politely wrestling with theology, it's unexpectedly entertaining stuff. The movie is about Bergoglio contemplating retirement but instead being summoned to see Pope Benedict in the Vatican. If the diametrically different leaders in "The Two Popes" can find common ground, surely there's hope for us all.
