Astronaut is unquestionably Dreyfuss's movie and it's a joy to see him getting the chance to take centre stage for the first time in years. Astronaut wants to be an escapist adventure about what happens when an old everyman wins the opportunity of a lifetime to go to space, but it's too rote and leaden-footed to fulfil that experience. It is McLeod's first feature-length film.
Through the niches and comely library aisles of off-label modest. Astronaut is probably not the film you think it is. The logline — a senior citizen enters a lottery to join the first commercial flight into space — suggests a movie where a grouchy but loveable. Shelagh McLeod's sentimental drama lacks resources to build a credible world gearing up for the first commercial space travel. But Richard Dreyfuss still manages to inspire. World-premiering in Edinburgh this week, Astronaut is a poignant rumination on late-life regrets, its plot partly inspired by the death of McLeod's own mother.
