The decision to play out the action at this length has been condemned by some reviewers as a self-indulgent folly. Canet's movie is more troubled, cooler, perhaps even a little bitter.

It ends in a blush of melodrama that's like a great purging of bad-feeling. French actor-turned-director Guillaume Canet impressed with his debut, Tell No One, but this Instead, Little White Lies unspools as glossy, high-grade tosh, a sun-dappled Big Chill, without the rigour or insight required to make you care about. Little White Lies is a rather oddly balanced blend of comedy and drama, and considering how deep its themes go, the comedy is often surprisingly blunt and broad: Director Canet calls on dropped pants, seasickness, and people falling off a boat to generate big laughs in between rounds of introspection.
