No Country For Old Men doesn't require a defence: it is a magnificent return to form, transplanting the despairing nihilism and tar-black humour of Fargo to the arid plains of Blood Simple. Beautifully photographed (by Roger Deakins) in leathery Texas tans, No Country For Old Men is filled with twists and surprises, hypnotically engaging from its very first scene. But in reality it's a film with no resolution, all of the important characters that you've grown attached to die off screen, and you're left with a movie with absolutely zero good story telling unless you look into the metaphors and explanations.
