As I've grown and come to appreciate Mask of the Phantasm, The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Returns as peak representations of my Batman, it's easy to see I find myself in the tortured Batman. The Bruce Wayne defined by his parent's death, riddled. I feel like these movies were rushed and meant to serve as cash cows. From the beginning, it is clear that we are in a different time, sat in with a Bruce Wayne and a Gotham City that are not quite right. While it's not as hard and cynical, or even as grimy as the original Frank Miller comics, DKR manages to locate and skirt that razor's edge of the Bruce. Peter Weller leads an all-star voice cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman in this animated adventure, debuting on Blu-ray and DVD.
For starters, being the first part of an animated feature has its advantages.
