When his manager prevents Fei Ying Xiong from getting the girl he loves, he summons the help from four legendary Kung Fu masters to learn the highest level of martial arts from the best in history and to defeat his enemies. "Kung Fu League" is a kung fu fan's ultimate dream. Jeffrey Lau and company nailed the small idiosyncratic details of each master to properly do them justice. The slapstick and situational humor is fits nicely and the film doesn't take itself too seriously - inviting you to almost join in the fun with them.
Kung Fu League is a title that has connotations of a movie about a league, of kung fu. Instead, what we have is a mish-mash and a hark back to the old days of really terrible CGI. The movie poster and trailer features four legendary martial art masters: Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung, Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man, fictional character Chen Zhen (first If you were a fan of any of the four kung fu legends, you may end up being disappointed by how they are treated in this movie. Kung Fu League is self indulgent, funny, and has a blast lampooning the serious backstories of legendary martial artists with a sort of meta glee. The movie has it's fair share of flaws, especially regarding the CGI, but it's a film that took my by surprise and revels in the ability to just have.
We are unsure if this film is a serious martial arts movie or an action comedy. In the action film, Kiung Fu League, Fei Ying Xiong is an indigent comic book artist who is romantically. There is a kinetic energy to the tale with no shortage of action, and it feels like a comic come to life (which is the idea) but this type of movie is most certainly.
